about
I am a freelance writer specializing in offbeat takes on familiar topics and issues--I go beyond the obvious and dig past the same old story to offer new insights and a counter-intuitive perspective on things you thought you already knew about. My interests, like everyone's, span many subjects but much of my writing falls into a few loose categories: architecture, food, humor, American cultural studies, American politics . . . and most of all, travel. Want to read some stories? Here ya go. My articles, essays, and commentaries have appeared in The San Francisco Chronicle, World Hum (the Travel Channel's online magazine), The Star Tribune, The South Florida Sun-Sentinel, American Bungalow, Vita.mn, American Lifestyle, and other publications. I'm currently working on a book about my recent Not-So-Grand Tour of Europe, during which I was guided only by a 1963 copy of Arthur Frommer’s Europe on Five Dollars a Day. Visit the book web site to learn more, read an excerpt, and see some photos. I graduated from Carleton College with a degree in American Studies, and can tell you way more about the social significance of diners than you ever wanted to know. (Tip: in the Twin Cities, go to the Band Box; Mickey's is for tourists.) I'm based in Minneapolis, which I am convinced is one of the great cities of the world. Not that I'm biased or anything. Click here for my guide to the city and you'll see why this town is so great. And come visit us for further proof!
